End of an era

Big surprise. Panasonic have been making televisions in Australia since about 1968.

Now they are the only Australian manufacturer of TV’s left.

Today it was announced the factory will be closed.

a sad situation indeed, but one we as Australians will have to deal with. Manufacturing is not viable here due to high overheads non less than our geographic isolation to major export markets. Secondly the reality of us being a centre for R&D is somewhat a pipedream when you look at the low numbers in engineering and applied science associated degree programs. Infact people from the countries who tend to get our manufacturing make up a large proportion of those in our engineering schools. Somebody has to do something, and soon.
